Teeth Whitening

Whiter teeth always grab the attention of people around you. They help you get a flawless smile and act as a serious confidence booster. However, not all of us have such a great smile due to discoloration issues caused by both internal and external factors.

Dr. Sylvia Urbina offers customized teeth whitening solution to her patients. The treatment procedure will be determined after careful diagnosis of the patient’s condition and to make sure they get the best results possible.

What are the causes of teeth staining?

  • Excessive consumption of colored foods: Patients who regularly consume foods that contain artificial coloring agents, beverages, aerated drinks, etc. often experience teeth staining.
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco:Smoking not only stains the teeth but also leads to many other oral complications such as oral cancer. The stains left by smoking or chewing tobacco are very difficult to get rid of.
  • Improper brushing and flossing: Dentists advice that one brushes their teeth at least twice a day using an ADA approved toothpaste. But when the brushing technique isn’t right, it can lead leave dark or yellowish patches on the teeth.
  • Medication: Certain medications are known to have ill effects on the color of the teeth. Also, getting a root canal therapy could cause the tooth to look discolored.

Conventional teeth whitening

It is the simplest and most common type of whitening procedure. The dentist uses a whitening gel, which is essentially an oral bleach, for this purpose. Prior to starting the procedure, the teeth will be screened for any cavities, restorations, and infections that could interfere with the whitening process. A rubber dam will be used to keep the whitening gel from coming in contact with the gums. The whitening gel will be applied to the teeth and spread evenly. It will be allowed to stay for a few minutes before being rinsed off with water. Depending on the severity of staining, the procedure may be repeated multiple times.

Whitening using customized trays

Patients who wish to sit in the comfort of their house and get whiter teeth can prefer this option. When you visit us for a consultation, we would take molds of your teeth and send it to a laboratory to get your own custom trays manufactured. You can wear them along with a dentist-prescribed whitening gel while at home. The tray prevents the intervention of the saliva with the whitening gel, thereby making the procedure highly effective.

Laser whitening

Laser whitening is one of the many applications of a laser in dentistry. We would use a photosensitive whitening gel for this purpose along with a laser of a specific wavelength. The gel will be applied to the teeth and the laser will be used to activate it. The gel produces a foam upon activation, which helps to get rid of the stains. Laser whitening is, by far, the quickest whitening process and would be the perfect option to patients who have a busy schedule.
